I started learning Korean by watching Running Man since 2012 with English subtitles. Before that, I was already listening to Big Bang, 2PM, SNSD, Psy, Wonder Girls and many more - their hit songs - yet Hallyu wasn't a thing then.
Then came BTS and it got crazier with Boys over Flowers hitting worldwide fandom of its own and that's when watching K-Drama is a thing for me. So I slowly started to learn Hangul only 3 years back because of work - YUP! Work!
But today, I'll skip the Korean Alphabet first and straight on share with you guys the words and phrases you K-Drama fans should know!
I'll list 5 for today as a start okays.
어떻게 - How?
Romanization: eotteoke
This is a common expression you hear in Korean dramas which is expressed when a person doesn't know how to do something. Someitmes, it is also used to express empathy to another person.
하지마 - Don't do that
Romanization: hajima
This phrase consists of the verb 하다 (hada means 'to do') + 지마 (jima means 'to do something'). 하다 + 지마 = 하지마. It is a shortened version of 하지마세요 (hajimaseyo). This phrase is hear in dramas a lot, along with 가지마 (gajima means 'don't go'). It is often said in a pleading tone by whichever character is getting dumped in that particular scene.
죽을래 - Do you want to die?
Romanization: jugeullae
Often this is said when somebody is really annoying the speaker. The ending - 을래 (요) (eullae (yo) means 'to want') and is often used as a question 'do you want?' In this phrase, it is added to the end of the verb 죽다 (jugda meaning 'to die'). However, you can also use this ending in other situations such as 뭐먹을래요? (mwomeog-eullaeyo - 'What do you want to eat?')
그래? / 진짜? / 정말? - Really?
Romanization: geurae / jinjja / jeongmal
When somebody finds out some exciting gossip, then he or she will almost certainly say one of these three words.
All of these words mean 'really?' in English. They are all used with about the same regularity as the next so learn them all ans use them to sound more natural. You might also hear them with a 요 at the end, such as 그래요 (geuraeyo), 진짜요 (jinjjayo) and 정말요 (jeongmal-yo).
잠깐만 - Wait for awhile
Romanization: jamkkanman
This phrase is usually used when you want another person to wait for you. It literally means 'for awhile' or 'wait for a while'. You can add 요 (yo) to it to be polite, which would be 잠깐만요 (jamkkanman-yo). Another variation of this expression is 잠시만요(jamsiman-yo).
So there's your 5 most common words and phrases as a K-Drama fan should know!
