  • DAY-2

I was looking forward to this weekend because its the first weekend of the Singapore Arts Week : 13th Edition 2025.

YES! ARTS!

And the event I was looking forward to was the Light to Night Festival at the National Gallery Singapore because, just because.

ree

So the plan was for ALL OF US to attend Gustav Klimt - Falling In Gold exhibition at Kallang Wave Mall then proceed to Light to Night Festival at National Gallery as well as Padang. Yet Lil' Junior still could not decide whether he wants to tag along or stay with his friends, and since Mother wanted to go over to Twilight Festival at Suntec City, I said, "Okay lah. I follow you then I go National Gallery after that."

But BabyK didn't wanna go as well as Bibik so they both stayed home while Lil' Junior went out with his friends (Haiz! My boy is so big now!)

We went to Suntec City via bus (one bus only - perks of staying Yishun lor!) and we arrived - FULL HOUSE but manageable with the younger boys pushing the stroller (Aryssa their niece was with us). They bought some food and we walked around for awhile before me and Mother became tired so we went out and sat down to eat.

Then my sister came with my niece and Aryssa's elder brother before our elder sister came with her husband and Alyssa (Aryssa's younger twin sister). It then became a family gathering right outside Twilight Event. We didn't plan to meet up but we somehow found each other. Hahaha.

Then we walked around Suntec looking for my grandson's outfit but ended up with me buying more Teck Deck' for myself and LEGO's instead for BabyK.

That aside, we then proceeded to National Gallery to attend the Light to Night Festival after that and spend the night away with all the activities available for FREE (some are ticketed if you are interested - but I very cheapo)! So we walked from Suntec City all the way to National Gallery by foot because I want to walk and everyone followed instead. Hehehehe.

The rest didn't wanna walk further to National Gallery so they waited for us at Esplanade Park while we walked over to National Gallery instead - just me, the younger boys as well as their niece, Aryssa.

So what I wanted to really see with the boys was the Light Projection.

They have it at 4 different locations : National Gallery Singapore, The Arts House, Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall as well as at Asian Civilisations Museum - but I chose National Gallery because its nearer and easier to go to. But maybe who knows I might go again to the other locations next weekend? Plus, there are more projections at the National Gallery than the rest.

Since it was packed with guests indoors, we only settled for the Light Projection outdoors and also the installations at Padang. The boys sat down quietly and watched the Light Projection, so excited to tell me what they saw. There's even food trucks too!

Light Projection was presented by ARAFURA, a multimedia design studio based in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Specialising in various mediums such as video mapping, augmented reality (AR), and interactive systems. ARAFURA explores the idea that “light travels, it bends, it tells,” using light to illuminate narratives in captivating ways.

Committed to pushing artistic boundaries, ARAFURA invites audiences to engage with their work on multiple levels, creating immersive experiences that resonate with contemporary themes.

The works of artists like Jaafar Latiff, Chng Seok Tin and Goh Beng Kwan was brought to life in this year's Light Projection at the National Gallery display.

The Perception of Beauty by Jaafar Latiff

Jaafar Latiff (1937–2007) revolutionised batik art by blending traditional techniques with bold, abstract styles. His flowing strokes and experimental approach challenged conventions, pushing the boundaries of this traditional medium. The Perception of Beauty shines a spotlight on his influential career, focusing on his works from the 1970s to the 1990s. It traces his pioneering advances in batik, acrylic painting and early computer art, showcasing his relentless pursuit of modernist innovation and his transformative impact on the art landscape in Singapore.

Spirit of Resilience by Chng Seok Tin

Chng Seok Tin (1946–2019) was a pioneering Singaporean printmaker whose influence extended beyond printmaking to sculpture, painting, and music. Despite losing her vision after an accident in 1988, she continued to innovate across various mediums and push creative boundaries. This projection explores her artistic journey, showcasing how she navigated life’s challenges while developing her practice. Featuring selected works, it illustrates Chng’s resilience and her unique approach to art, capturing the essence of her multifaceted career.

Imprinted Memory by Goh Beng Kwan

As an artist, one explores the constant need to accept new identities that involve embracing changes in oneself, whether due to personal growth, life experiences or societal influences. This animation chronicles Goh Beng Kwan’s monumental journey as an artist and depicts his experience in adapting to new surroundings, cultures and challenges.

TRAVELLING THROUGH THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST

(FREE)

Padang

Travelling Through the Tropical Rainforest is made up of six colossal sculptural forms that resemble tropical palms. Set against the cityscape and constructed from manmade materials, the work is a commentary on the interplay between the natural and urban environments in a city’s evolving landscape. The work confronts audiences with a superscale magnification of what would otherwise go unnoticed, and also serves as nature’s invitation to be seen and coexist amidst Singapore’s urban landscape.

It then rained, so we rushed back to the rest at Esplanade Park for shelter and had Subway before heading home via train. Told the younger boys that we'll come back again next week instead for the other activities and they said okay!

Can't wait! Really!
